n. a case for holding cartridges: formerly a case containing bullets to be discharged from a mortar but now merely a waterproof canvas case for holding the cartridges of a field battery one to each ammunition-box: (archit.) an ornament resembling a scroll of paper with the ends rolled up: an oval figure on ancient Egyptian monuments or papyri enclosing characters expressing royal or divine names.—Also Cartouch′.
