(n.) In some northern counties of England, a division, or district, answering to the hundred in other counties. Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire are divided into wapentakes, instead of hundreds.

Definition

n. a name given in Yorkshire to the territorial divisions of the county similar to the hundreds of southern counties and the wards of more northern counties so called from the inhabitants being formerly taught the use of arms.
