(n.) A venomous two-winged African fly (Glossina morsitans) whose bite is very poisonous, and even fatal, to horses and cattle, but harmless to men. It renders extensive districts in which it abounds uninhabitable during certain seasons of the year.

n. a dipterous insect of South Africa (Glossina morsitans) not much larger than the common house-fly brownish with four yellow bars across the abdomen strangely limited within sharply defined areas or 'fly-belts.' Its bite is fatal to the ox horse and dog.
